  1. Remember when we attended school in the church? How many of you guys got your ears pulled by Andrena Hanson Opheim? The girls got to go play with paper dolls in another room when we had our work done. Carol Orman & I were good friends in grade school. Notice we are wearing the same dress.

  2. Marilyn, I remember David Randall, the boy 3rd from the right in the last row...I thought they lived in town but apparently he went to the "country church school" too? I think that is him isn't it

  3. Because of having two classes at once, Miss Hanson had to come up with these schemes to manage the classroom, like the Stop and Go sign she hung on the door. If it said Stop that meant someone was already in the bathroom and you couldn't go. If it said Go, that was the green light. And it didn't take long for 5th graders to forget to turn the sign over so more than one could escape the classroom undetected.

One time we had 5 or 6 of us in the boys bathroom at once. Chuck Helgeland was sliding his hands together out of excitement, saying, "It's a new record!" at just the moment that Miss Hanson pushed in the door and barked at us to go back to the classroom. We all did, except for Mark Haugebak, who was sitting on the throne.

  4. On another occasion a number of us had somehow earned the right to be out for recess or something and were standing at the bottom of the church steps when Barb Forland very excitedly was standing at the windows whisper-shouting that Chuck Helgeland and Miss Hanson had gotten into some type of altercation. You figure it out.

And then Miss Hanson was suddenly standing alongside Barb with a big smile on her face like all was alright, and she kind of pushed Barb back in the direction of the classroom.

In today's world, the consequences for both would have been interesting.

  5. David was in 6th grade, and this was the 5/6 combination. Lots of stories about this adventure. It was held in the 2nd floor of First Lutheran Church in the room normally used for Sunday School. There were only about a dozen of us in 5th grade, as I recall but I'll have to do a closer count, and "Miss Hanson" would alternate teaching the groups. I think most of us had her for 6th grade, too. If I'm not mistaken our 6th grade year was when they added "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and there was a big to-do about the proper way to say it. I still don't know for sure.
