Basketball and Football

  1. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure Mike Lien ever dunked. Without relying on Dave Skellenger. Dave would get on the floor on his hands and knees, arch his shoulders, and Mike (and others) would use him for a launching pad.

I tried to be Skelly once, but give Dave credit - somebody launching from your shoulders takes a lot of strength, and I couldn't do it.

Maybe Skelly Will See This And Do Something To Restore The Legend.

  3. Richard, Gerry Pike said that night when we viewed your video, that Mike was standing on his shoulders.

  4. If Mike Lien had one goal in his life, it may have been to dunk the basketball. He was constantly trying to figure out ways to get it done.

You know he was a huge basketball fan, and thinking of him reminds me of the time he and his dad had gone to a pro game in St Louis. Bob Pettit was playing for the St Louis Hawks, and Mike was able to get a spot almost under the basket during warmups so he could even hear the players talking. The lasting impression he brought back with him was how the players talked to each other. "They were always calling each other 'Pisser'," he said. "Hey, Pisser!" "Throw me the ball, Pisser!"

    What a memory.

  5. You are correct in thinking it was David S's strong back that Mike used for his dunking activity. The rest of us on the team were lookouts for Maynard Midtgaard, who would have had us running laps if he knew we were screwing around like that. I also remember the last practice of our Fresh/Soph BB team where we flooded the shower room...don't think Mr. Wilder, the coach, was ever aware of that prank.
    Lots of fun memories!

  6. Chuck, it's so funny to hear all those stories about you guys & the pranks you did. Next time I see Maynard I'm telling. Did you know you were quite the lady's man in about 4th grade?

  7. What makes you say that?? I don't have any recollection of being a lady's man in 4th grade. Maybe I wasn't tuned into that kind of thing back then. Clue me in, OK?!!!

  8. Chuck, I remember you had a list of girlfriends & we would ask if we were on your list.
